A MAN has died a week after a horrific crash near Trawsfynydd.

The man, who was aged in his 70s, died in hospital on Sunday, 12 August, a week after he and another elderly person were involved in a collision at the A4212 junction with the A470 at Trawsfynydd.

The collision involved two vehicles – a black Jeep Cherokee and a silver Peugeot van.

Both occupants of the Cherokee were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries and the driver has now died in hospital.

The passenger has since been released.

The Cambrian News understands they are not local to the area.

This tragic incident occurred just three miles south of the scene of another fatal accident in January when Anna Williams, 22, from Penrhyndeudraeth, and six-month-old Mili Wyn Ginniver, from Blaenau Ffestiniog, died following a collision with a lorry on the A487 near Gellilydan.

Mili’s mum Sioned Williams was also severely injured in the accident.

Urgent calls for new safety measures have been made for the roads in this region by local councillors and MP Liz Saville Roberts. They are demanding an immediate reduction in the speed limit on the busy trunk road which is notorious for its sharp, dangerous bends and steep ravines.

Cllr Elfed Roberts - who represents Trawsfynydd, Gellilydan and Maentwrog - said the Welsh Government was not reacting quick enough to install life-saving measures.

“I did visit the site of the fatal accident on 5 August, and emailed the Trunk road agency that day but I’m still waiting for reply regards the accident,” he told the Cambrian News.

“There are over nine junctions situated around this stretch of road at Trawsfynydd and local people are concerned that these fatal accidents will keep occurring.

“Something urgently needs to be done but the Trunk Road Agency is refusing to discuss the matter with me.”

Sergeant Raymond Williams of the Roads Policing Unit said: “Sadly this is now being investigated as a fatal collision and we are renewing our appeal for witnesses.

“Our thoughts remain with the family of the man involved and they are now being supported by a specially trained family liaison officer.

“We know that the road was busy at the time therefore we are urging anybody who may have witnessed the collision, or anybody who may have seen either vehicle being driven prior to the collision and who have not yet come forward to contact us.

“Equally, anybody who may have been in the area at the time and who may have dash cam footage is urged to please contact the Roads Policing Unit.”

Anybody with information is asked to contact officers at the Roads Policing Unit on 101 quoting reference number W110156.
