THE captain of Aberystwyth Town Football Club has been banned from driving for 17 months after he admitted driving while at almost twice the drink-drive limit.

Luke Sherbon (pictured), who gave his name to the court as Luke Flynn, admitted drink-driving on 29 August and also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance after initially denying the charge.

Prosecutor Kevin Challinor said Flynn, of 56 Garth Dinas in Penparcau, was stopped by police at 4.30am at Heol y Bont after a police computer check showed the VW Golf he was driving had no insurance.

While speaking to 30-year-old Flynn, officers smelt alcohol and asked him to take a roadside breath test, which he failed. A test at Aberystwyth Police Station showed Flynn had 69 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Flynn, who represented himself in court, had pleaded guilty to drink-driving on Wednesday, 14 September, and was made subject to an interim driving ban while checks were made on whether he was insured after he told magistrates that he thought he had insurance.

However, Flynn said that after making enquiries he had discovered he wasn’t insured after a payment had failed to go out of his bank account and he hadn’t noticed.

He apologised for the two offences. He said: “This was a stupid mistake. I’m embarrassed and sorry really.”

Flynn, who is listed on the Aberystwyth Football Club website as Luke Sherbon, was banned for 17 months. He was also fined £280 and will have to pay costs of £115.

Aberystwyth Town Football Club chairman Tony Bates said the club did not want to comment on either the drink-driving conviction or the change of name.
