Thieves have broken into an historic hotel, causing “considerable damage” and making off with cash, including staff tips, worth over £800.

The Ty’n y Cornel by Talyllyn Lake was broken into on Sunday night – and a reward is being offered for information.

The hotel said on Monday: “The hotel got burgled last night, obviously some no-good people about at the moment. Generous reward on the cards to help catch the thieves. The sad reality is they have stolen from every staff member as they share the tips out monthly and this is all gone.”

Speaking to the Cambrian News, a spokesperson said: “It has come as an awful blow as we try to keep the business afloat and maintain jobs for as many locally employed staff as we can. The thoughtless intruder caused considerable damage and stole the takings, including all staff tips for the month. This has left us with a bitter sense of intrusion at a time when we least need it.”

They added: “The saving grace has been all the good wishes received from the local community and past and present guests.

“We are also grateful for the quick and effective support given from the local police.”

North Wales Police is investigating. A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 7.38am on Monday, 3 August, reporting a burglary at the Ty’n y Cornel Hotel.

“Officers attended along with specialists from our CSI team, and our enquiries are ongoing.”

It has been a difficult year for the business which, as well as being affected by lockdown, suffered flooding in July.
