AN ANGRY councillor has called for CCTV cameras to be installed in Dolgellau in a bid to crack down on crime.

Linda Morgan called for the council to explore the possibility of a surveillance system after three window panes in her front door were damaged by vandals.

“It was very loud and very frightening,” Cllr Morgan, who lives in the town centre, told the assembled councillors.

“It was just after 4am on Sunday morning and there was shouting, I felt very uncomfortable.

“It’s a great shame that there’s no footage of the perpetrators and that we don’t have CCTV cameras in town, they’re sure to have helped.

“It’s so important to have CCTV these days, for everyone in town, so people know they’re protected.

“I think it would be significant for the area, even if something happened outside of town, the footage might help ascertain what happened.”

Cllr Morgan has asked for a discussion of CCTV cameras to take place in January’s town council meeting.

Cllr Heilyn Williams, who was not present at the December meeting, will also be asked how many cameras in are currently in the town and how functional they are.

Cllr Ywain Myfyr made the point that there are cameras present at T? Siamus in Eldon Square and that “every corner of that building is covered”.

Cllr Bob Gunton suggested the town council contact Deana Fisher, who runs the Gwarchod Bermo Watch CCTV scheme in nearby Barmouth, to ask her for her thoughts and opinions.

Cllr Dyfrig Siencyn concluded that Barmouth’s preexisting system was superior to Dolgellau’s but welcomes the chance to discuss the matter further.
