A LLANILAR couple are warning residents not to fall for a malicious letter which claims the recipient has won staggering sums of money on the lottery.
Tony Jones, 81, and his wife Yvonne, 75, received the letter through their door last week and were stunned to read they had won £385,000 from the People’s Postcode Lottery.
But to the street-wise couple, something didn’t seem right.
The letter, addressed to Yvonne at their home address, stated she had won £385,000 out of a prize fund of £45m following an electronic lottery draw, and claimed to be the “biggest ever non-ticket lottery played in the world”.
The letter instructed Yvonne to call a Mr John Baker, ‘foreign service manager of Ultimate Finance Plc’, and provides a phone number.
It went on to state that the prize must be claimed no later than 17 March, or the prize money “will be returned to the UK Board of Internal Revenue”.
There is no such authority called the UK Board of Internal Revenue, and the name is known to have been used in scams in other parts of the UK.
“I am concerned that this scheme is targeting people in the local area,” said Mr Jones.
“The worrying thing is that it is addressed to my wife by name, but I don’t suppose it is difficult to get the details.
“It is a serious matter and I would like to warn people about it.”
