Details have been revealed about which areas of Aberystwyth will be covered by the town’s new CCTV system.
CCTV is set to return to Aberystwyth by the end of the month, as the Cambrian News revealed at the start of February, five years after it was scrapped by Ceredigion council in a cost-cutting move.
Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn said work has started on putting 10 state-of-the-art cameras back up in Aberystwyth, after the system was mothballed in 2014 despite vehement opposition.
Great Darkgate Street and Marine Terrace will each have two cameras.
Individual cameras will be placed to cover Eastgate/Pier Street, North Parade, Terrace Road/Portland Street, Alexandra Road, Ffordd Parc-y-Llyn and Heol-y-Bont.
Calls for the system’s reinstatement have been made ever since they CCTV was switched off, amid fears over rising crime numbers and falling conviction rates.
Baydale Control Systems Ltd started work in Aberystwyth last Monday and the system is set to be up and running by the end of February
Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies, who has continually called for CCTV to be reinstated and fought against the decision to close the old system down, said: “Switching off the town’s CCTV cameras was a retrograde step, and as the councillor in whose ward all the cameras are located I looked forward to them being reinstated.”
When the CCTV cameras were scrapped across the county five years ago it saved the authority £150,000 a year.
