DUNES, a tumble dryer, a chimney, and hundreds of square metres of grass and bracken have been ablaze as firefighters continue their relentless battle with fires this summer.
Holidaymakers and locals were dismayed to see Fairbourne’s Penrhyn Point well alight (see right) on the weekend, just weeks after fires first blackened the dunes at the end of June.
On Sunday afternoon, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received “lots of calls” from concerned onlookers as 300 square metres of gorse and bracken burnt to a crisp.
Later on the same day, firefighters were called to a fire in Pen y Gwndwn, Blaenau Ffestiniog.
Ten square metres of bracken had been deliberately ignited but the fire was quickly quelled.
On Saturday 14 July, fire crews from Harlech, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Porthmadog were called to a gorse fire at approximately midday. It was nearly 20 hours before the fire service was able to safely say the fire had been fully extinguished but not before 250 metres of land was left scorched.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, firefighters travelled to Morfa Lodge estate in Porthmadog after a tumble dryer caught alight due to an internal electrical fault.
The dryer suffered 70 per cent fire damage and the utility room where it was located was inflicted with 20 per cent smoke damage.
Unusually, considering the time of year and temperature, firefighters were also tasked with putting out a chimney fire in Tan y Bryn, Blaenau Ffestiniog at approximately 2.45pm on Sunday.
The chimney fire had been caused by an accumulation of soot. Firefighters made the chimney safe.
