The owner of a smallholding has praised New Quay firefighters for their “caring and professional approach” at the height of Storm Callum.

Steve Christopher, who lives with his wife near Post Bach, Talgarreg, described how their flooded property was “promptly” attended by retained firefighters from New Quay.

“They deployed a water balloon in an attempt to divert much of the water, contacted the local authority for sandbags and assisted in baling out water from the property,” he said.

“Without their expeditious professionalism, I believe the impact of the deteriorating situation would have been much worse.

“The next day, one of the crew, Greg Johnston, offered to attend the property in his own time to further assist managing the flood which he did for a couple of hours."

A grateful Mr Christopher has now written to the chief fire officer of the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service to “formally commend and thank the caring and professional approach of the retained crew from New Quay”.

Mr Christopher added: “We would also like to thank family and friends who worked overnight on Saturday to prevent the property being completely flooded.”

Meanwhile, the group running a Llandysul arts centre say they still do not know the full extent of flood damage.

The Pwerdy Powerhouse Community Arts Centre at Pont Tyweli was hit particularly hard when the River Teifi burst its banks.

“Volunteers have cleared the worst of the debris, and the committee is now allowing the building to dry out and assess the full extent of the damage,” said a spokesperson.
