THE future of Machynlleth Police Station is secure, although discussions are ongoing about a possible new building, town councillors have heard.

Members of Machynlleth Town Council were told that potential plans for a new building to provide a joint facility between the police and fire brigade were being discussed by authorities, and Chief Inspector Stephen Davies, who addressed councillors at their November meeting, said he was adamant the town needed a police station.

Chief Inspector Davies’s backing for the town’s police station to remain open mirrors that of Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn who also told councillors at an earlier meeting that he wanted to retain a station in Machynlleth.

While the current police station in the town is well-located, Chief Inspector Davies, who is the head of operations in the Ceredigion division, which includes Machynlleth, said the building itself needed to be updated and said that the cost of a major renovation and refurbishment meant the police and fire brigade were looking at possible proposals for a new joint facility.

He said: “That’s a piece of work that is continuing. There is no plan to close Machynlleth station. Like I said, it may be moving from where it is, but there is no closure plan to my knowledge and I’d like to think I’d know if there was."
