A WOMAN jogger was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car at an accident blackspot in Aberystwyth last night.
Police said the 25-year-old, who has not been named, was hit by a white Toyota Yaris as she crossed the road near the Starling Cloud on Boulevard St Brieuc at around 6.30pm.
She was airlifted to The Heath Hospital in Cardiff with injuries described as “serious”, where she remained in critical condition overnight.
Police said the accident happened at the pedestrian crossing.
In November near the same spot a boy on his bicycle was hit by a car and in October 2013 a Penparcau pensioner was knocked down while crossing the road.
The previous incidents resulted in minor and non-life-threatening injuries but local councillor Paul James said this week that urgent speed limit changes need to be made after the latest, more serious, incident.
Stephen King, of Aberystwyth Athletics Club, which holds a training club on Monday evenings for its women’s group, said he had heard about the incident but that it was likely to be a “lone runner”.
Dyfed-Powys Police officers, a fire crew from Aberystwyth, paramedics plus a HM Coastguard rescue helicopter were all called to the scene.
The road was closed for several hours while police investigators carried out an examination and survey of the scene.
Police said they are continuing to investigate the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact the Dyfed Powys Police Roads Policing Unit on 101.
A spokeswoman said on Tuesday that the woman was hit “at the pedestrian crossing” and remains in critical condition. She added that an “investigation is continuing” but she was not able to say whether the lights were on green or red.
