A SEARCH in Aberystwyth has led to what police believe to be the largest ever seizure of heroin locally.
The police force said a stop and search by officers in Aberystwyth led to the discovery of approximately one kilogram of heroin, worth an estimated £125,000, on Friday, 14 May.
The search was carried out near the town’s castle grounds and the drugs seized had the potential to produce 12,500 individual street deals, police said.
Officer in case Detective Sergeant Steve Jones said: “This was a significant seizure of class A drugs which were destined for the streets of Aberystwyth and wider Ceredigion.
“At this point, we believe it to be the force’s largest ever heroin seizure.
“Enquiries were very rapidly progressed to forensically test the substance and carry out digital investigations, with a number of officers from various teams working together.”
• Two men have been charged with Class A drug supply offences.
A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Two men were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the supply of drugs.”
Michael James Price, 48, of South Road in Aberystwyth, was charged with possessing heroin with intent to supply.
John James Rooney, 44, was charged with supplying heroin, acquiring, using or possessing criminal property – namely £2,325 in cash.
He has also been charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
Both have been remanded in police custody until they can appear at magistrates’ court, a Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson added.
