Local MP Liz Saville Roberts has given her backing to a fundraising scheme which is looking to build a new lifeboat station on the Llyn.
Ms Saville Roberts attended an open day at Plas Heli, Pwllheli, on Saturday to view proposals to build the new lifeboat station on Abererch sand dunes and talk to members of the lifeboat crew and volunteers involved with the project.
She said: “I was delighted to call by the RNLI open day at Plas Heli on Saturday to view plans for a new, purpose-built lifeboat station in Pwllheli and talk to volunteers and crew.
“I understand that demand for a new lifeboat station is driven by the phasing-out of the Mersey-class lifeboat, which is being replaced by the new Shannon-class boat.
“The new lifeboat station will also reinforce Pwllheli’s strategic importance to maintaining adequate search and rescue cover.
“I was encouraged to learn that the new-build lifeboat station will also include a visitor engagement and education together with viewing facilities, strengthening the close relationship between the RNLI and the local community.
“So much of the work of the RNLI is down to its dedicated volunteers and we must thank them all for their selfless work over the years in helping to keep so many people safe.
“Our local lifeboat crews put themselves in danger to make sure that we are kept safe. I want to take this opportunity to thank these brave men and women for all the work they do and I look forward to following developments at Pwllheli closely.”
