A PARAGLIDER had a lucky escape at the weekend after he plummeted out of the sky and into the sea, narrowly missing the cliffs between Aberystwyth and Clarach.

The stricken paraglider’s partner quickly landed atop Constitution Hill and called the emergency services after seeing his friend disappear while they were circling above the rocky coastline at around 4.15pm on Sunday, 15 May.

While returning from the last of four inflatable rescues they responded to over the weekend, Aberystwyth RNLI Lifeboat’s Arancia crew were tasked by HM Coastguard to inspect the coastline and rescue the paraglider, who they suspected had collided with the cliffs before crashing into the sea.

The volunteer crew on board the Arancia quickly headed back out to sea, while the station’s larger RNLI Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Spirit of Friendship, was launched to assist in the search and rescue.
