A PWLLHELI pensioner who went out to buy his Sunday paper was punched in the head for no apparent reason, a court has heard.
The reason for the attack, however, was that the assailant, Lithuanian Vandas Gruzauskas, wanted to be arrested in the hope that the police would send him home to Lithuania.
At Llandudno Magistrates’ Court Gruzauskas, 27, pleaded guilty to assaulting 78-year-old David John Jones in Y Maes, Pwllheli, as he chatted to another man.
Alex Fitzgerald, defending, said Gruzauskas had been in this country for only a month and was homeless.
He had been drinking when he carried out the assault.
“It was an unbelievably foolish thing to do,” he said.
District Judge Gwyn Jones jailed Gruzauskas for 60 days and ordered him to pay Mr Jones £200 in compensation.
He must also pay a surcharge of £115.
