“DISGRACEFUL” vandals who targeted Aberystwyth’s war memorial have been accused of being “mindless” and “thoughtless” by members of the Royal British Legion and local councillors.
The word ‘Pigfart’, which has been daubed on buildings in other areas of the town including the police station, was sprayed on the memorial on the castle grounds.
A reward of nearly £600 and rising has been offered to anyone who gives police information about the vandalism which leads to a conviction.
Colonel Patrick Norrington-Davies, the president of Aberystwyth’s branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “Graffiti is always disappointing but to vandalise a war memorial in such a manner is disgraceful.
“Sailors, soldiers, airmen and women along with many heroic men and women of the volunteer organisations gave so much for this country, many the ultimate sacrifice of their own life to protect those that they love, their families, their friends and their country.
“Many were in appalling conditions, enduring all that was pitted against them.
“Many suffered then and many suffer still today with both physical and mental injuries.
“In the centenary year of the ending of the First World War, it is staggering that some mindless individual or individuals can be so thoughtless in their actions and I would hope that in the cold light of day they feel considerable remorse for their actions in attacking such an iconic and sacred war memorial that was given by the people, for the people and future generations of Aberystwyth.”
