Six people are being treated in hospital after being caught in a rip current off Aberdyfi.

Aberdyfi and Borth coastguard rescue teams, Aberdyfi lifeboat, the coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon, the Welsh Ambulance service and two air ambulances attended the scene where early reports suggested eight people “were being resuscitated”.

HM Coastguard, led by officer in charge Geoffrey Unsworth, confirmed six people were taken to hospital and two others were treated at the scene.

“Three people were taken to hospital by the coastguard helicopter, one by an air ambulance and two by road ambulance,” a coastguard spokesperson said.

“Two other people were checked over by paramedics on scene and did not need onward transfer to hospital.”

The casualties were taken to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth and Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

The details of their injuries have not been released.

A rip current is a strong, narrow current of water which moves directly away from the shore and can be hazardous to people in the water.
