Smoke from a wildfire in mid Wales is drifting west across Ceredigion.

Firefighters from across the region are tackling a significant wildfire near Glascwm, with a fire front estimated at around 600 metres.

Smoke from the fire is drifting west over Ceredigion and local fire crews are warning anyone affected by smoke to keep windows and doors closed.

Aberaeron Fire Station posted on social media: "Smoke from the ongoing wildfire near Glascwm, Llandrindod Wells, is being carried westwards and may be visible and noticeable across parts of Ceredigion, including Aberaeron and surrounding areas.

"The wildfire is currently being tackled by fire crews, and smoke from an incident of this size can travel considerable distances depending on wind direction and conditions.

"If you are affected by smoke: Keep windows and doors closed if smoke becomes heavy or causes irritation; Avoid unnecessary time outdoors in areas where smoke is concentrated; If driving through an area affected by smoke, slow down and take extra care due to reduced visibility; Keep children and pets away from areas where smoke is particularly dense; Please do not travel towards the fire to watch or take photographs — this can hinder firefighting operations and put you and others at risk; If you see a new fire or flames, call 999 immediately and provide your location as accurately as possible.

Crews from Builth Wells, Rhayader, Hay-on-Wye, Brecon and Llandrindod Wells were mobilised to the incident at 12:29pm today (Monday).

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “This incident is currently ongoing. The crews are responding to a wildfire involving gorse and grass.”

On Facebook, Llandrindod Wells Fire Station said crews were dealing with a “significant wildfire incident” and that the fire front was estimated at approximately 600 metres.

It said “a significant amount of smoke” was being generated, with smoke visible from a number of miles away.

“Due to the current wind conditions, the smell of smoke has been reported as far away as Builth Wells,” the station said.

Firefighters are working to contain the blaze and bring it under control.

Members of the public are being asked to avoid the affected area to allow emergency services to operate safely.

The fire service also advised people affected by smoke to stay indoors where possible and keep windows and doors closed.

One smoke has cleared and it is safe to do, open windows and doors to help ventilate your home.

People travelling on surrounding roads are being urged to take extra care, as smoke may reduce visibility.

The station added: “Do not attempt to approach the incident to take photographs or videos.”
