STORM Bronagh has caused chaos with transport with Machynlleth’s Dyfi Bridge closed and train services between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury cancelled.

Heavy rain and high winds hit Wales on Thursday, 20 September and though conditions eased slightly on Friday, the Dyfi Bridge was closed late on Thursday night and remains closed today, while flooding on the train line between Machynlleth and Caersws led to Arriva Trains Wales having to cancel services.

An Arriva Trains Wales spokesperson said services had been disrupted by flooding from around 10pm on Thursday with regular checks being made to establish when services can recommence.

They said: “Our partners in Network Rail advised us of significant flooding at Black Bridge between Machynlleth and Caersws at around 10pm last night.

“As such the line has been closed since then, although trains are operating between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth and between Newtown and Shrewsbury/Birmingham in both directions with buses operating between Newtown and Machynlleth.

“A first inspection took place of the bridge at 7am on Friday, 21 September and the water level was still at the closure mark so the line has remained closed this morning.

“We continue to work closely with Network Rail to get services running again as quickly as possible and we thank customers for their patience.

“Customers should check before travelling for latest journey updates.”
