A FORMER Aberystwyth student left two female students feeling “completely betrayed” and “violated” after planting a webcam in the bathroom of a student house, a court has heard.

Kyle Ryunosuke Walker, 22, escaped an immediate prison sentence after magistrates opted to impose a suspended sentence on him, but was ordered to register as a sex offender after he admitted two charges of voyeurism.

Walker, now of 84 Faringford Road in Stratford, was arrested after one of the female students found the webcam he had hidden in the bristles of a toilet brush.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said the female student had discovered the webcam as she was cleaning the bathroom and realised it was a camera when she examined it.

She removed it and told a friend and eventually managed to access the footage on the camera which contained three clips of Walker “tweaking” the camera position, but also included footage of her topless.

Ms Morgan said the student had recognised Walker on the footage from his clothes and hair and contacted the police about the camera.

In a victim impact statement, the female student said she had felt “shaken up” by the discovery, but was angry that Walker had placed a camera which she said could have provided a lot of footage of people in the bathroom if she hadn’t found it when she had.

Defence solicitor Katy Hanson said while magistrates may believe the case crossed the custody threshold, as Walker has no previous convictions that sentence could be suspended to allow the probation service to help him deal with issues of depression and isolation.

She said Walker had since moved university, but that he hadn’t realised what he was doing was illegal.
