POLICE are warning that a female lynx has escaped from the Animalarium in Borth.
It appears the lynx may have been missing for up to five days.
They are advising people in the area to be alert and vigilant - although say that the lynx is unlikely to approach people, but may attempt to take livestock or pets as food.
A spokesperson said: “We do advise that the animal should not be approached as it could become aggressive if cornered.
“It is believed that the lynx remains in fairly close proximity to the Animalarium, but of course it could potentially go further afield.
“Any sightings should be reported to us by calling 101, or if the lynx is in the process of taking an animal, or appears caught or injured, then please call 999.”
The Animalariun says that it is an Eurasian lynx - a large cat with a stubby tail, young and juvenile, tan and white in colour, with dark spots on her back and legs.
She is about twice the size of a domestic cat with black tufts on her ears.
A spokesperson said: "She is not used to hunting live prey but will chase rabbits and rodents when she gets hungry. Lynx can travel about 12 miles a day, but the chances are she hasn't gone far.
"We will be putting out camera traps around the perimeter of the zoo and relying on sightings by the public. Once we learn her location and follow her trail pattern we can set up monitored traps to catch her."
Zoo owners say that fully-trained keepers are on hand, ready to deal with the situation. You can contact the zoo on 01970 871224.
