POLICE are appealing for witnesses after flares thrown on to the pitch during a crunch relegation battle at Aberystwyth Town damaged the club’s 3G surface.

On Friday, 14 April, Aberystwyth Town faced Rhyl at Park Avenue, needing to win to retain their Welsh Premier League status.

The 4-0 victory, celebrated by a crowd of over 700 people, was marred by flares being thrown by visiting supporters in the Dias Stand during the second half, with Rhyl on their way to a defeat that consigned them to relegation.

Police said the flares damaged a small area of the pitch that required repair by the club, and are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

PC David Hawksworth said: “During the closing stages of the match between Aberystwyth Town FC and Rhyl FC several ‘Pyrotechnic Flares’ were thrown onto the pitch causing damage to the 3G playing surface.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC 436 Hawksworth at Aberystwyth Police Station on 101.
