A GRANDMOTHER called police in a panic, after her young grandson brought home a used syringe from a local park, after mistaking it for a toy.

The incident has sparked fears over drug use in Porthmadog.

PCSO Mark Hughes was called on Sunday by a frantic grandmother after her grandson, who was under 10 years of age, brought home drugs paraphernalia which he found whilst out playing in Pensyflog Park.

The youngster had found a syringe and a grinder, a device used to break cannabis up so it can be smoked.

Fortunately the child involved did not accidentally prick himself with the dirty needle, as infections such as HIV and hepatitis B and C could have been transmitted from the syringe, depending on who had used it.

The community police officer was appalled by the incident.

“Drugs are a growing concern and need to be combatted. This is not the sort of thing you want to hear about,” said PCSO Hughes.

“This incident could have had far more serious consequences.

“The youngster involved thought the items were toys and took them home to show his grandmother."
