A FORMER Aberystwyth University lecturer has released a supernatural story with a festive twist.
Prolific Welsh author Mihangel Morgan says he has published the new novel to ‘fill the void’ in Welsh ghost stories for Christmas.
“The season is upon us and Christmas time needs good ghost stories!” said Mihangel.
“But there aren’t that many Welsh ghost stories - and especially ones with a Christmas twist.”
The author, who lectured in 20th century Welsh literature and creative writing at the Welsh department of Aberystwyth University, has written his own take on the ghost story just in time for this year’s festive season, and the result is Hen Bethau Anghofiedig (Old Forgotten Things), a novel published by Y Lolfa.
In the nefarious novel, two old friends meet for the first time in years on a train journey on a long winter’s night.
Merfyn has a scary story to share, one that begins with him inheriting a grand house from his aunt, the famous author Mona Moffat.
He and his partner, Harry, dream of renovating the old place and retiring from the wild life of the city of London. But horrible truths risk undoing everything...
“Of course, nobody really believes in ghost these days, do they?” said Mihangel, “but if you were to stay in a big old house on a dark winter’s night on your own - would you still think the same?”
Speaking a little more about the book, Mihangel said: “The book is written in the Welsh language and is a new story set in Wales. The inherited house is in a remote part of Wales.”
Mihangel wrote this story a couple of years ago but waited until now to get it published.
“I wrote it about two years ago and then left it for a while,” he said.
“It’s the time I’ve written a novel as a ghost story, although I’ve written short stories with ghosts in. I thought we needed a Welsh novel that’s also a ghost story for Christmas.”
