Madam,
Turkey has just mirrored our dismal referendum result. Though there was much criticism from all over the world about the narrow result, a Turkish spokeswoman used the case that we had happily accepted such a result.
The word democracy was used, though false voting papers were observed and the ‘No’ side was not allowed the same media coverage. Sweeping new powers, under the guise of democracy, are in the hands of president Erdogan.
As I have said many times before, instigators of a referendum should have to show a convincing majority to change something, and the status quo side should have the right to reply. That is democracy of a fair kind. Even a quorum of nine would show an approximate 44 to 55 result.
Yours etc,
Chris Smith, Bryn Deiliog, Llanbedr.
