Madam,

I am writing to warn your readers about a peril that threatens the moral integrity of our town.

It is a plan to stage a theatrical production at the beginning of October which will make Aberystwyth the butt of some cheap humour.

The name of the production is Aberystwyth Mon Amour and is the work of a company called Lighthouse Theatre, from Swansea.

I am given to understand that they, and their troupe of strolling players, have been drummed out of every respectable town in Wales.

The show, is supposedly satirical, but strikes this reader as merely impertinent. It besmears the good name of the local druids and portrays them as gangsters. It contains violence, bad language and a scene involving a night club singer, a private detective, and a donkey in bed that would make a sailor blush. Even that time-honoured badge of respectability, the stovepipe hat, is not immune. Is nothing sacred?

As you know, the past few years have taken a heavy toll upon the moral fabric of our town. We have seen the arrival of cappuccinos in the high street, shops selling olive oil, one-way systems… even a fish restaurant scandalously built into a former public convenience. Sooner or later we must take a stand.

May I take the opportunity through the good offices of your newspaper to call on all decent-minded folk to boycott this play?

And if you have daughters of an impressionable age I urge you to lock them up.

Yours etc,

Malcolm Pryce, Hernes Crescent, Oxford.
