Madam,

My guess is that we are in for many years of debate about the pros and cons of the proposed Aberystwyth to Carmarthen railway service. It surprises me that your correspondents have already made up their minds about the value of such a line when so far all that has been done, very effectively by a pressure group, is to bring the option of a reinstated line to the notice of the public and politicians.

The proper response, as the Scoping Report describes, is to carry out a detailed investigation into all the issues that are listed in the report. These include such fundamentals as the policy and planning requirements as well as detailing what it would cost to build and whether the likely passenger figures would make it economically viable. There is a lot of work to be done and some considerable expenditure before enough information is available to make good decisions.I hope that the results of these studies are made public and the final decisions are taken transparently so, whatever the outcome, the future development of the transport system as a whole is seen by everyone as being of real benefit to Wales.

Yours etc,D J Kyle,Llanilar, Aberystwyth
