Catholic Services
THERE will be a Mass on Sunday, 29 November at the Holy Cross Catholic Church at noon.Community ChristmasTHE annual Community Christmas event will be held on Saturday, 28 November at Pwllcam. Starting at 3pm, there will be children’s choirs and other entertainment, face painting, stilt walking, balloon sculptures, free mulled wine and cawl — and Father Christmas in his grotto. The highlight of the event will be the turning on of the Christmas lights by mayor Tom Williams at 5pm, followed by the announcement of the winners of the window spotting competition which started on Friday, 13 November — last entries due in to J R Evans shoe shop by 4pm on Friday, 27 November. Entry forms can still be collected from the shop, the Aberaeron website and Facebook page. A donation will be made to the Min-y-Môr Residential Home League of Friends in Ceredigion following the event.
Aeron Valley Railway Society
THE NOVEMBER meeting was held at the Feathers where 20 members were treated to a very interesting and graphic talk by guest speaker Malcolm Garner. The subject was fun with southern steam, which was depicted by many of his own pictures, on what it was like on southern metals in the 1960s and previously in his childhood days.The next meeting is the annual Christmas dinner at the Feathers Hotel on Wednesday, 16 December.
Football Club
ON SATURDAY, 28 November, the First team have a Spar league Cup match away to Waterloo Rovers with kick-off at 1.45pm. The Reserves are also away in the Emrys Morgan Cup against Llanfair United or Newtown Rovers with kick off at 1.45pm.Recent results include a 3-0 loss against Tywyn Bryncrug for the Firsts.
Choral Concert
CORAL Aberaeron Chorale will present their autumn concert on Saturday, 28 November in Holy Trinity Church at 7.30pm. The programme will include The Christmas Oratorio by Bach as well as a full supporting programme of popular seasonal favourites. The soloists are well-known artistes Caryl Glyn, Buddug Verona James, Robyn Lyn-Evans and Richard Morris. As has become a welcome tradition by now, the choir is fortunate enough to have the honour of performing with two acclaimed musicians, Charles Matthews, organist of St Catharine’s, Chipping Campden, and the cellist Kathryn Price, who will also conduct the choir. Tickets are available from the Memorial Hall (01545 574934), from choir members or at the door on the night of the concert.
Senior Citizens
A KILLING in Cardiganshire was the talk at our 15 October meeting. Guest speaker Arwel Jones had researched the mysterious killing thoroughly and we were all intrigued and fascinated by the tale.On 29 October we were entertained by the Pigs’ Foot String Band, a group of like-minded musicians playing American old time music. On 12 November, Prof Len Kersey, retired physics lecturer from Aberystwyth University gave a very interesting and illuminating talk on rainbows, not only on how they appear in the sky, but we are also aware of how they feature in art, literature and song.
Give Blood
THE WELSH Blood Service will be visiting the Memorial Hall on Friday, 27 November from 11am to 7pm. Donors both new and returning are encouraged to attend.
Cancer Research coffee morning
PENIEL Chapel vestry was the venue for a very successful coffee morning arranged by Aberaeron’s Cancer Research Committee. Chairman Neris Lloyd introduced Chris Roberts, area fund-raising manager for West Wales who gave a brief resume of the research being carried out. She also introduced Menna Heulyn, who officially opened the coffee morning and supported her address with a generous donation. Thanks were given to all for their support and contributions and as a result a total of £902 was raised.
