Reunion 1939

SEVENTEEN pupils who attended Aberaeron County School prior to and during the Second World War, and one guest, attended the 27th reunion at the Hive on the Quay for a buffet lunch on 21 May, including three who had been evacuated to the area. The ravages of time have gradually reduced the numbers capable of attending, including the Pwyllgor Bach, now down to just two; Rhiannon Davies Cooper and Aneurin Jones. The number attending was further reduced by the last minute withdrawal of three who were physically unfit on the day – something that is to be expected in view of the age range of the group. Those present were asked whether they wanted the reunions to continue and the response was unanimous in favour of doing so. At this point the Pwyllgor Bach asked whether anyone would be prepared to help in the organising of future reunions and John Price volunteered to help.

John led those assembled in the singing of the school song, Gaudeamus Igitur, and acted as master of ceremonies. He introduced Aneurin Jones who enlightened those present with his memories of his early days at the school. The highlight of which was being part of the choir of the whole school that the then headmaster, Howell Evan, organised for prize-giving day. With lunch over, a group photograph was taken before the attendees went their various ways, with the hope of meeting up next year.On the Sunday morning seven of the group gathered for coffee at The Hive on the Quay to discuss the previous day’s event and next year’s reunion. The date was set as the Saturday of the weekend before the late May bank holiday, with a similar format to this year’s reunion.
