A Gwynedd councillor who helped to clear over a dozen bags full of rubbish which had been left by fly-tippers in Abertrinant has described the act as “selfish and irresponsible.”

Cllr Louise Hughes, who represents Llangelynnin, came across the rubbish whilst on a walk on Tuesday, 29 December.

Items in the litter included cans, bottles, paper face masks and an asthma inhaler.

She said: “I stumbled across this fly-tip when I was out walking my dog.

“What looked like a couple of black bags of rubbish turned out to be 15 bags, so somebody had gone to a lot of effort to dispose of them.”

Cllr Hughes added: “Myself and one of the council’s enforcement officers cleared the mess and went through the bags but unfortunately there was no identifying evidence or someone would have been landed with a £400 fine.

“There is absolutely no excuse for fly-tipping, it’s selfish and irresponsible.”

A spokesperson for Gwynedd Council said: “Fly-tipping is a criminal offence, it damages the local environment and poses a threat to wildlife.

“If caught, a fly-tipping offender can expect to receive a £400 fixed penalty for small scale tipping, or a fine of up to £50,000 or jail sentence for larger offences.”
