50+ Forum

JANE Guest from Sight Cymru was the speaker at the July meeting of the 50+ Forum.

She spoke about the various eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts, that can affect older people and the effects these can have on their lives, which can be psychological as well as physical.

These can include loss of confidence, depression, social exclusion and loneliness and can lead to a loss of employment, the need for help in the home and can threaten independent living.

To help illustrate her talk, Jane brought a newly acquired 3D model of an eye, parts of which could be removed to reveal its inner workings and show the areas affected by the different eye conditions.

This proved an effective visual aid, enabling members to have a better understanding of what happens when problems arise in the eyes.

Jane also spoke about the work of Sight Cymru, which provides a range of services to help blind and partially sighted people.Information about the services provided locally can be obtained by ringing 01495 763650 or by e-mailing Jane Guest at [email protected]The Aberystwyth 50+ Forum will be holding an afternoon tea party on Wednesday, 31 August, from 2pm until 4pm at the Morlan Centre, Queen’s Road.

As well as tea, there will be a number of stalls including a cake stall and a bric-a-brac stall. Come along and enjoy a cup of tea, a cake and a chat for £1.50.

Stroke Club

FOR the outing on 17 August, 42 members travelled to the Conrah Hotel by coach and cars to have afternoon tea. The chairman welcomed all and introduced us to three new members. Jean and Judith circled the room with the raffle tickets and the quarterly Stroke magazine.

We sat down to a really superb tea with a varied selection of dainty sandwiches, Welsh cakes, scones with jam and cream, bara brith, macaroons, tiny profiteroles and an unusual serving of lemon cheesecake.

When all the tea and coffees had finished, the 650 club numbers were drawn, the many cheques made out and there were smiles all around for some lucky people. The raffle then took place and all the lovely prizes were handed out.

With many thanks to the staff for the excellent way they looked after us all, and for the delightful tea, we all said goodbye and made our way home.

The social secretary reminded us that the next venue is Borth, not the Emlyn Cafe as on your membership card.
