Aberystwyth Arts Centre has announced that it will be closed to the public from 6pm this evening.

During an extraordinary day of closures, the arts centre in Aberystwyth is the latest venue to announce its closure because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier today, Theatr Mwldan in Cardigan announced it was closing its doors and earlier this afternoon, the National Library of Wales said it would be closed to the public from 5pm this evening.

In a statement, the arts centre, which is located on Aberystwyth University’s Penglais campus, said: "Aberystwyth Arts Centre will close to visitors from 6pm today (Tuesday, 17 March) until further notice.

"The safety of audiences and staff is of paramount importance in making this decision. We will continue to follow guidance as to when we should recommence our programme.

"Our box office team are contacting all ticket holders to arrange refunds and advise of rescheduled dates, but please be patient with us as there are many hundreds of people to contact.

"We will update our website and social media regularly, so please keep checking for the latest updates."

The closures come a day after Prime Minister Boris Johnson told people to avoid theatres, pubs and public gatherings.

Machynlleth Comedy Festival also announced earlier today that it would cancel May’s festival and look to come back bigger and better in 2021.
