International Day of Peace has been marked by a small ceremony in Aberystwyth this afternoon.

Aberystwyth Town Council held an official event to celebrate the day for the first time earlier today, following a request from residents.

As part of the celebration, a small ceremony to raise the peace banner at the town council’s South Marine flagpole, which normally flies a Welsh flag, was held.

Aberystwyth mayor Cllr Alun Williams gave a speech, Côr Gobaith performed and a peace banner has been put up in the town council office window.

Cllr Williams said: “When the town council was asked by a group of local residents to take part in marking the United Nations International Day of Peace on 21 September it had no hesitation in agreeing and it will be a pleasure to raise the flag.”
