Aberystwyth will host the first ever Amnesty Wales Conference next weekend.

Members of Borth Amnesty Group have been working with an Amnesty Wales representative and UK national offices to create the first Wales Amnesty Conference on Saturday, 19 October.

The day focuses on the theme ‘Wales: small nation; global human rights defender’, and brings together a wide range of speakers focusing on human rights issues both at home and abroad. MP Ben Lake will be delivering the opening speech.

Jenny Williamson, from the Borth group, said: “The day will include excellent speakers, such as Amnesty UK director Kate Allen and a panel discussion, along with workshops on a range of human rights subjects.

“There will be an Action Centre with stalls and exhibits from other organisations including Syria Relief, Extinction Rebellion, Aber Welsh society, Shelter Cymru, Aber food bank, Freedom from Torture and an exhibition of Rohingya Childre’ns art.

The day will be action-focused, not only updating attendees on human rights issues, but giving them a clear path to furthering their own activism.

The conference will bring activists together to share experiences and opportunities to plan working together in the future.

Everyone is welcome, including non-Amnesty members. The conference fee will contribute to the running of the conference and include tea and coffee on arrival and a finger buffet lunch. The conference will be bilingual.
