Toilets at Talyllyn Railway’s Wharf Station have been twinned with a pair of toilets in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The twinning comes after the railway’s toilets, earlier this month, received Loo of the Year Awards.

The railway announced that both the ladies’ and gents’ toilets at Wharf Station have been twinned with a pair of toilets installed in the village of Kabindi.

The toilets also received the Platinum Award in the prestigious 2019 Loo of the Year Awards for both the ladies’ and gents’ toilets at Abergynolwyn and Wharf Stations.

In the United Kingdom, the charity Toilet Twinning encourages people to donate money to twin toilets with a facility to be provided in a developing country.

The £60 donation required to twin the toilet, which can be made by private householders, shops, businesses or corporate organisations, enables families in poorer communities to build a basic toilet, have access to clean water and learn about hygiene.

A spokesperson for Talyllyn Railway said: “We’re proud to be able to Twin our Platinum Award Winning Toilets with those in the village of Kabindi in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“We know how important clean and hygienic toilets are to our 50,000 visitors a year and to be able to offer that to the residents of Kabindi, we hope this will kick-start an improvement in their quality of life.”

The railway is now appealing to members and friends to help twin Abergynolwyn Station toilets, the only ones left on the railway that are not twinned.

Anyone wishing to donate is asked to contact railway on 01654 710472 or Tywyn Baptist Church on 01654 711752.
