Climate activists on both sides of the debate converged on Fairbourne over the weekend where a controversial talk was being held.

The talk was given by climate change denier Mark Windows at the village hall on Saturday, where he claimed that rising sea levels were ‘fake news’.

This event attracted protesters who feel that climate change is a very real threat – and one that puts the future of the village in jeopardy.

Amongst the protesters was Tywyn town councillor and climate campaigner Quentin Deakin.

He said: “We felt it was important that the views of this fringe group, so out of step with mainstream scientific knowledge and understanding, were opposed by a demonstration highlighting the facts of climate change and the dangers of pretending it isn’t already happening and that humanity has nothing to do with it.”

He added: “Numbers in the protest were small, but so were the numbers of local people going in to their meeting.

“Next time such a group attempts to ‘ignite’ a community, in their words, I appeal to all in the silent majority to join us in demonstrating for the future of our children and their environment.”
