An Aberystwyth woman will take on the Sydney Marathon to raise money for Bronglais Hospital’s chemotherapy unit, which treated her grandmother during her battle against cancer.

Alice Kemish, who is currently travelling and working in Australia, signed up for the Sydney Marathon after deciding that she wanted to do something in memory of her grandmother Babs Kemish, who sadly passed away last year.

She has already raised more than her initial £500 target in just a couple of weeks, and has now said she will be looking to raise as much as she possibly can.

Alice, 25, who moved to Aberystwyth with her family after growing up in Llanrwst, had travelled back from Australia last year to be with her grandmother before she passed away.

She said: “This time last year I had just finished the longest journey of my life.

“It took 56 hours from the middle of Australia to the middle of Wales.

“I got six weeks with my wonderful Nan before the cancer took her.

“It was the saddest day of my life when I felt her stop breathing under my arms.

“Over the years my family have shown the most incredible strength and fought back against all the odds and I’ve never told any of them how much they inspire me.

“I feel like it’s my turn to try and give something back."
