Madam,
So the new Police and Crime Commissioner is going to represent everyone in north Wales is he (‘Pledge to serve all the people of north Wales, Cambrian News, last week)? Too bad that he starts by alienating half the electorate by “warning” that the UK will be a more dangerous place if we leave the EU.
He gives no reasons why Europol would be weakened or why it would be more difficult to work with the Garda in Ireland and seems to have lost sight of the fact that it is thanks to the EU’s ridiculous Schengen Agreement (which mercifully the UK and Ireland are not a part of) that terrorists and criminals can travel from the remote tips of Greece and Italy and from Eastern Europe to the north coast of France without a single border check of any kind.
If the commissioner wants to make the UK and the rest of Europe a safer place, he and police forces across Europe should be lobbying for the Schengen agreement to be scrapped and border checks reintroduced across Europe. That would make us all immeasurably safer and is nothing to do with whether the UK is a member of the EU or not.
Yours etc
Alan MacMaster
Barmouth.
