Jill Baxter is quite right, social justice is an endless battle, demanding that we all vote, if only to elect the least detrimental government (Views, 27 May).

She scorns the economic policies of Labour, and refers to newspaper cuttings from 2007, that condemn Gordon Brown for selling half of our gold reserves. However, several countries were then selling their gold, because it both paid no dividends, was a volatile asset, and the modern global financial system made gold an anachronism.

Even good newspapers have their bias, but the right-wing media is notorious, not least the Express, which recently scorned his judgement, comparing the price of gold in 2007 to the current price today, an utterly false equivalence.

She says the tax credits system was flawed, but again, several countries had already established such a system. John Major considered the tax credit system to be ‘theoretically impeccable’ when compared to the Tories’ Universal Credit, which he said was ‘operationally messy, socially unfair and unforgiving’.

All political parties are far from perfect, and capitalism has a great potential for good, providing the economic cake is fairly divided, and that distribution is heading relentlessly in the wrong direction.
