Madam,

I’m also sad that police time is being taken up at climate change protests (‘Waste of Resources’, Letters, 10 October) - it would be so much better if government resources were directed towards urgently combating climate change. However, tragically, our government is not yet telling the whole truth about the climate and extinction emergency. School Strike and Extinction Rebellion supporters are asking for transparency so that the public can not only prepare for the worst but also work together to head off avoidable devastation around the world.

Recently, I came across a 2004 UK government booklet entitled Planning for Emergencies in my kitchen drawer. Our government sent this to every household in the UK in the face of the perceived terrorist threat. So why can’t we be fully informed now about the scale and risks of climate change and help the government make difficult decisions - ideally using the democratic tool of a Citizens Assembly?

Recent UK and US official advice appears to suggest that all we can do is resignedly get ready for the effects of climate change. This is the folly we should be referring to, not the protests. We can all play our part in creating a better and more beautiful world - but only if we know the truth about the situation we’re facing and what we can do about it.

Yours etc, Dr Angie Polkey, Swyddffynnon.
