Madam,

Being a grandparent, I find it is quite annoying to hear that Llanbedr bypass has been put on hold.

Llanbedr, although a beautiful village, is quite a dangerous place for young children during the summer months.

Those who live or travel through Llanbedr know only too well the level of traffic is overwhelming and chaotic during these times. Gridlock is quite common with tailbacks stretching well outside the village boundaries.

Just thinking about the bridge, it was never intended to carry the loads imposed on it, it is from the days of horse and cart. Just imagine the consequences if it were to collapse under the strain imposed on it? How much strain can it actually take?

These stresses are further exaggerated during times when the road is gridlocked; a large stationary lorry could be stuck on that bridge for a long time, how much do they weigh?

It’s worth considering; and what of the footpath, it’s extremely narrow, no protection from passing vehicles or vehicles mounting it when passing is tight, definitely not that safe!

Looking at the bigger picture we are totally reliant on that bridge as without it we’d have no infrastructure; how would we get about, how would we get food to the shops? We all know quite well what would happen if the bridge was deemed unsafe and shut.

Luckily we now have good roads leading to and from our village. However, it wasn’t always like that.

A trip to Barmouth or Harlech was quite a journey at one time. The roads were winding and narrow, serious accidents and deaths were commonplace. However, progress has made our lives much safer.

The bypass is the future. It will create jobs, initially in its construction, later in whatever enterprise venture it brings with it.

Llanbedr will be a safer place for the children and our local heritage will be preserved.

I urge those against the bypass to think on!

Yours etc, Rob Williams, Llanbedr.
