Madam,
I am pleased and encouraged to see that the Cambrian News has not bypassed the events of the killing of the lynx. The letters in the Cambrian News from Hugh Hughes, Chris Samuel and Julia Read show the extent of interest and repulsion that remains for the slaughtering of the lynx.
The inability of the owners to maintain complete care of the two lynx that have died stays firmly on their shoulders and conscience, and maybe to a lesser extent also with the authorities that are assigned to regulate and inspect the well-being of all the animals.
Hugh Hughes raises some important points concerning the issues of blame, investigation and reviews. There is no doubt with local residents and many more people and organisations further afield that there is a real interest in the continuation in seeking answers into the events and decision-making that led to the seemingly unnecessary slaughter of this animal, and in identifying those responsible for the carrying out of this act.
Furthermore, it is imperative that lessons are learnt and adequate regulated procedures, including proper risk assessments and inherent danger analysis, are put in place should other animals, which are solely retained for the visual enjoyment of us humans, escape their confined enclosures are then safely captured and returned to their ‘homes’.
Yours etc,
Phil Turner-Wright, DÔl-y-bont, Aberystwyth.
