Madam,
I am writing in response to your article concerning the refusal of planning permission for the old CCW Computers shop in Chalybeate Street, Aberystwyth.
Surely anything is better than leaving it in the sad condition it is in at the moment?
Alun Williams says that this street is feeling the benefits of the new development with extra footfall. Has he spoken to any of the business owners in Chalybeate Street to find out if any of them are experiencing an increase in trade?
The owners I have contacted have all told me of a drop in sales this year, as we are experiencing ourselves. While a few new businesses have opened, it remains to be seen how many will close this year, especially those who have experienced a rise in their business rates, not to mention the imposition of the BID levy which we are forced to pay despite not seeing any initiatives coming forward after six months of discussions.
At times even Great Darkgate Street is quiet and, whilst I realise that times are getting harder, for most I feel that the fate of the town is at stake!
Yours etc,
Yvonne Crocker, Maeth y Meysydd, Chalybeate Street, Aberystwyth.
