THE Cambrian News has got nearly £6,000 to distribute to local charities and groups – the proceeds of the popular 2015 Aberystwyth 10k Race.
Applications are invited for a share of the £5,986.40 raised by the Cambrian News Aberystwyth 10k Race, held at the beginning of December.
The race, which is organised by the Cambrian News, in conjunction with Carl Williams and Aberystwyth Athletics Club, raises thousands of pounds for local charities each year.
The 2015 race raised a record sum from entry fees alone – and local charities and other local groups and organisations now have the opportunity to bid for a slice of that money.
Thousands of pounds of sponsorship was also raised by runners, who will be donating their money direct to the charities of their choice.
Last year’s race, which took place on 6 December, was hailed a huge success, with around 560 runners taking part.
Runners young and old, from all over the country, pounded along the promenade to the finish line near the bandstand.
Anita Worthing of Aberystwyth Athletics Club, who helped organise the event, said: “It was the largest turnout ever and we had a strong local business entry too.
“As well as a good showing of local entrants, it is great to see a significant number of entrants from further afield.”
Mr Williams said: “I would in particular like to thank all the volunteers, without whom this race could not go ahead. Thanks to you all for your hard work.”
Cambrian News managing editor Bev Thomas said the newspaper was thrilled with the way the race was growing in popularity and stature.
“Every year there are more runners taking part and more and more money being raised for local charities,” she said.
“The Cambrian News took over the race five years ago to save it from being axed, and to see it flourishing is a testament to the hard work of our co-organisers Carl Williams and Aberystwyth Athletics Club.”
“We look forward to this year’s 2016 race – the 18th – being the biggest and best ever. It will be held on Sunday, 11 December.”
