ARMED police swooped on Machynlleth after reports that a man had been brandishing a knife and making threats to kill.

Dyfed-Powys Police told the Cambrian News that a 47-year-old man was arrested shortly before 4pm on Monday.

Police were called to the Tan y Graig estate shortly before 1.30pm after reports that an unnamed man was armed with a knife and had threatened neighbours.

A police spokesperson said: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a man making threats to kill at around 1.25pm on Monday, 17 September.

“Officers attended an address at Tan y Graig.

“The suspect left the property of his own accord at around 3.50pm and was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill. He remains in police custody.”

A witness said armed police had attended the incident and there had been an “hour-long siege”.

The witness said: “A man was arrested after an hour-long siege with armed response.

“I got there at 3.20pm and armed police were there already, with multiple police blocking off roads leading to the area.

“I understand there had been threats to kill a woman living on the estate and another neighbour. No gun was actually seen but the threat was taken seriously.” The 47-year-old man has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
