Madam,

Myself and three friends wrote an open letter to Robert Davies (Letters, 18 June) regarding his proposal for a 10m metal tree on Borth beach. We argued that the project was environmentally unacceptable.

Mr Davies has not replied, and I find his silence on this important matter concerning.

On the weekend of 13 to 15 September, an Extinction Rebellion “Rebel Rising” festival was held at Ynyslas (just north of Borth), within sight of the proposed location of the sculpture. This event is directly about the issue of climate change and how the public can play their part in trying to prevent the “existential threat” we are facing. And yet, at this crucial time, Mr Davies is still proceeding with his plan.

This white elephant of a project is an energyintensive environmental disaster which is not wanted by an overwhelming proportion of the people of Borth.

Mr Davies has a perfect opportunity to show true environmental leadership by cancelling this project, thereby saving large amounts of energy and helping to prevent climate change rather than being a major contributor towards it.

For the sake of all life now, and in the future, this metal tree should not be built. The power to do good is in the hands of Mr Davies, and I urge him to do the right thing and cancel this project.

Yours etc, Tom Gunn, Cae Gwylan, Borth.
