AS ANTICIPATION builds for this summer’s European Championships, a town councillor and his band are set to whip Dolgellau into a musical frenzy with their anthemic new football songs.

With less than 100 days to go until the Welsh football team’s first appearance in the finals of a major football tournament for nearly six decades, Cllr Ywain Myfyr and his folk group Gwerinos are performing their new hits, inspired by Wales’ successful qualifying campaign, at Ty Siamas this Saturday, 19 March.

Last week, the band released two versions of the same song penned in support of Chis Coleman’s boys on iTunes and most other downloading platforms.

Hogia Ni and All The Way are the first release for many years by the band, who enjoyed great success throughout the ’90s and ’00s.

Gwerinos got together again two years ago and have been actively gigging ever since.

The idea for the reworked songs came on a beach in Haifa, Israel last year.

“We had just seen Wales beat Israel 3-0 and I really believed that we could do it this time and ‘go all the way’,” said band vocalist and Sesiwn Fawr organiser Ywain Myfyr.

Excitingly, Ywain, a former head teacher at Ysgol y Traeth, also mentioned that the songs could potentially be played at the Cardiff City Stadium before Wales’ friendly with Northern Ireland at the end of March.

All proceeds from downloading or buying the songs will go towards Gôl, a charity which was set up by Wales team supporters who take toys and kit to orphanages when they play away in different countries.See this Thursday's Meirionnydd edition of the Cambrian News for the full story
