Barmouth Town Council has raised concerns “about the considerable disruption” that a £1.5 million upgrade of the local electricity network will cause.
The major electricity network works due to take place in Barmouth over the coming months include the full closure of King Edward Street from 16 November to 2 December.
Barmouth Town Council has raised concerns with SP Energy Networks about the disruption this will cause, as well as the need for clear communication, appropriate signage, diversion arrangements and access for residents and businesses.
The town clerk, the mayor and Cllr Lena Vacher attended a meeting with SP Energy Networks to discuss these concerns.
SP Energy said the King Edward Street closure is essential to carry out the work safely and cannot be delayed or carried out without a full road closure.
They said detailed and up-to-date information would be made readily available to the public.
“However, the SP Energy Networks website does not appear to include the detailed timetable or map which has been distributed on its printed leaflet,” town council notes.
SP Energy Networks said pedestrian access for residents and businesses will be maintained, diversion routes will be clearly signposted and advance notice will be given of significant changes.
Town council say they will share further information as soon as it is made available.
The ‘Cambrian News’ previously reported on the road closures that will be introduced in Barmouth so the £1.5 million upgrade of the local electricity network can be done.
The investment involves reinforcement of underground cables, boosting capacity and ensuring reliability and resilience as electricity demand grows.
The main phase of essential works starting in the town centre in mid-November requires the temporary closure for up to three weeks of King Edward Street, between The Royal pub and St Tudwal's Church, leading to a lengthy diversion and increased journey times for the duration of the closure.
SP Energy Networks held drop-in sessions in King Edward Street’s Oasis Community Room on 28 September, 30 September, and 5 October.
David Ford, SP Energy Networks Head of Planning and Network Improvement, said: "This investment will provide a much-needed boost to the local electricity network in Barmouth – most of which dates back to the 1950s and 60s.
“Upgrading now is essential to ensure we have the capacity to meet modern electricity demands and continue to provide a reliable and resilient power supply for homes and businesses across the area.
“This is a complex and challenging project and there’s no doubt this work is vital – but there’s also no doubt it will cause significant disruption, particularly around the closure of a key route like King Edward Street and that’s why we’re coming out to talk to people now.
“We’ve put a lot of thought and consideration into planning these works and worked closely with key stakeholders to undertake the most impactful phase outwith the busy summer season, but before Christmas festivities get underway. We’ll also be working with our contractor to deploy additional teams on the ground so we can move as quickly as possible.”
