TYWYN Beach Guardians have supported a crusader as he pedals against the plight of plastic.

Chris Woodfield, an environmental campaigner from Aberystwyth, is currently cycling around the entire coastline of Wales to raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution.

Chris Woodfield began his ‘Pedal Against Plastic – Wales Coastline Adventure’ on Sunday, 5 August, and passed through Tywyn and assisted on a beach clean on Monday afternoon.

Chris, who is the co-ordinator of the Plastic Free Aberystwyth group, organises beach cleans as part of Aberystwyth Beach Buddies and is one of the co-founders and directors of the environmental social enterprise Aber Food Surplus.

He said his plastic-free cycle adventure around the coast of Wales will be used “to proactively raise awareness of ocean plastics and demonstrate what we can do to make a positive difference.”

Coinciding with the Welsh Government’s ‘Year of the Sea’, Chris set off from Chepstow on Sunday to cycle the length of Wales, showcasing the natural beauty of our inspiring coastline, highlighting the issue of ocean plastics by engaging with members of the public, carrying out beach cleans along the way and posting tips and advice about how to live a plastic-free life.

Throughout his journey Chris is living single-use plastic-free and is asking for donations for the two charities Surfers Against Sewage and Keep Wales Tidy to continue their essential work in reducing single-use plastics, providing inspiring environmental education and conserving the marine environment.

Tywyn Beach Guardians were delighted to help him with his important awareness raiser.

Following a quick beach clean along Tywyn’s beach and promenade on Monday, Jane Gager of Tywyn Beach Guardians said: “Thank you to a our little band of beach cleaners today.

“We met Chris who is cycling around the coast raising awareness of plastic pollution and gathered some rubbish, even if it was not a lot, lots of bits of polystyrene hiding in the seaweed, a few nurdles and lots of cigarette butts on the promenade.”
