DANGEROUS broken glass and metal shards have been uncovered on a popular Llyn beach following extreme winds earlier this month.
The wrath of Storm Emma at the start of March washed away tonnes of sand from Llanbedrog beach, reducing the height of the beach by about two feet and uncovering the site of what appears to be an “old rubbish tip”.
Children and adults have been warned to take extra care this bank holiday weekend to avoid injuring themselves on scraps of ancient waste material.
This discovery has galvanised an ongoing clean-up involving hundreds of volunteers, which the charity warns could take some time to fully resolve, with the popular beach huts out of action until at least after Easter.
The buried rubbish is thought to be historical and consists of some burnt metal and glass.
The National Trust, which is responsible for the beach, is warning people not to walk on the beach barefoot and not to let children play and dig in the sand, until further notice.
The charity estimates that about 250 tonnes of rubbish – mixed in with sand – has already been removed from the beach by machinery and a further 10 tonnes by hand and they are working with relevant organisations to dispose of the waste safely.
