A much-admired former club chairman has been honoured by a memorial cup.

A new trophy has been presented for the first time to a junior Dolgellau Angling Association member in memory of a former club chairman who died in 2016.

The inaugural Maurice Ford Cup for Junior Fishermen was presented to Ben Williams of Dolgellau at the competition at Llyn Cynwch earlier this month.

Maurice Ford was a member of the club for 32 years. He was chairman for 12 years and vice president when he died at the age of 85.

His wife Leonore, who presented the cup, said that her husband would be delighted to know he had been remembered.

One of his greatest passions was to pass on his fishing knowledge to the club youngsters and he spent many hours teaching them how to fish.

Ben won the competition with the heaviest fish at 2lb and a bag of three fish weighing 5lb 15oz.

The club also took the opportunity to hold a coaching session for the children aged from seven to fifteen. Senior club members were on hand to pass on their expertise in knot tying, casting and fishing techniques.

It is hoped that the coaching sessions for youngsters will be a regular feature in the club calendar in line with the policy of promoting junior fishing in the Dolgellau area.
